Arras Tunnel a fitting addition

The Arras Tunnel is a fitting addition to the commemoration of New Zealand's part in the First World War and a great addition to the city, says Wellington Employers' Chamber of Commerce President John Milford.

"This is more than just a road tunnel.

"It tells the story, led by the commemorative poppies that line its walls, of a brave though sad part of New Zealand's history.

"I suspect the 41 New Zealand tunnellers who lost their lives at Arras would be proud of what has been achieved.

"I expect the tunnel will become part of what promises to be a piece of the city that will help people understand more what others sacrificed for them.

"It's the first step towards what I am confident will be an asset of which this city will be justifiably proud – the National War Memorial Park that will sit above it and which will be a major focal point for Kiwis to commemorate days of remembrance.

"The Government and the Memorial Park Alliance – NZ Transport Agency, Downer, HEB, Tonkin & Taylor and URS – are to be congratulated on a fine job done on time."
