Wellington Chamber and Wellington Culinary Events partner to bring Jonathan Gold to Visa Wellington On a Plate
World-renowned food critic Jonathan Gold will attend the 2017 Visa Wellington on a Plate held from 11 to 27 August.
He is being brought here courtesy of Wellington Chamber of Commerce and Wellington Culinary Events Trust.
Mr Gold, a Pulitzer Prize winner, currently writes for the Los Angeles Times, and is known for his love of cheap eats and hidden-alley gems.
Wellington Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive John Milford says the Chamber is pleased to be partnering with Wellington Culinary Events Trust to bring Mr Gold to this year's event.
"Visa Wellington a Plate is a major part of the city's event calendar, and we want to ensure we support this vibrant part of Wellington's business community.
"Having Jonathan attend will play a huge part in putting Wellington on the global culinary map.
"As we know, hospitality is a key part of why people love Wellington, and Visa Wellington on a Plate is a major tourist drawcard.
"The 17-day event is always a great chance for Wellington
hospitality businesses to showcase their talent and is a great boost to the
local economy in a traditionally quiet part of the year."
Wellington Culinary Events Trust Chief Director Sarah Meikle says Mr Gold usually shuns fine dining, instead preferring small, ethnic restaurants for his reviews, "so he's sure to enjoy the wealth of cuisines on offer in Wellington".
"As Visa Wellington on a Plate continues to grow, the focus has been on putting New Zealand's biggest culinary festival on to a world stage by sharing our messages with media from across the globe," says Ms Meikle.
"We're looking forward to seeing his documentary 'City of Gold' as part of The Roxy's Feast Your Eyes series, which will be followed by a Q&A with Jonathan himself. He'll also bring a fresh perspective to the ConversatioNZ Symposium, a one-day event which will explore Aotearoa's food scene and what's next for how our country eats."
Tickets are on sale from 19 June at www.visawoap.com
